We believe every pianist deserves the kind of insight that was previously only available to the world's best teachers — precise, data-driven, and deeply personal.
For centuries, piano feedback has been entirely subjective — dependent on the ear and opinion of a teacher in the room. Most players have no objective measure of whether they are improving, how consistent their touch is, or what separates their playing from the level they are chasing.
Melodian changes that. By connecting directly to your instrument via MIDI, we capture every note you play with microsecond precision, and transform that raw data into insights you can act on. Not vague encouragement — real numbers, real patterns, real growth.
And most of the reasons it stays hard are fixable — if you have the right data.
Progress is invisible
You can practise for months and have no concrete sense of whether you are improving. Melodian makes your growth measurable — session by session, piece by piece.
Feedback is rare and expensive
A good teacher is transformative, but lessons are a fraction of the hours you spend practising alone. Melodian provides intelligent feedback every time you sit down to play.
Everyone plays differently
Generic advice only gets you so far. Your dynamics, phrasing, and timing are your own. Our analysis is built around your individual playing profile — not a one-size-fits-all benchmark.
The ceiling feels unreachable
The gap between where you are and where professionals play feels abstract and enormous. We are building the tools to map that gap precisely, so you know exactly where to focus.
Practice without structure drifts
Without a way to see what's actually improving and what isn't, it's easy to reinforce bad habits or avoid the things that matter most.
Data has never existed for this
No one has systematically studied what separates professional-level playing from developing-level playing at the note and metric level. We're changing that.
Four principles guide every decision we make about the product.
Listen first — no friction
Melodian connects to your instrument and starts listening. No microphone setup, no sheet music import, no configuration. You play the way you always play. That is intentional — the best tool is one you don't have to think about. Seamless integration into your existing routine means you generate data every time you sit at the piano, without changing anything.
Your data, your profile
Every player is different. Your tendency to rush the left hand, the way your velocity spikes when a passage gets technical, your unique pedalling style — these are signatures. We build a model of your playing over time, so that insights are tailored to you specifically. Comparing you to a generic average misses the point; comparing you to yourself over time tells the real story.
Make progress visible
Progress on piano can feel painfully slow because there is no clear signal that you are improving. We track every metric — timing accuracy, dynamic consistency, note duration, hand independence — and surface trends so you can see growth that would otherwise be invisible. A rank system gives you a clear, motivating signal of where you stand and where you're headed.
Close the gap between amateur and professional
Our long-term goal is to understand, at a data level, what actually distinguishes professional playing from developing playing. Not just theory — empirical patterns derived from real performances. As our dataset grows, we will be able to show you exactly which metrics matter most, where the biggest gaps are, and give you a concrete, evidence-based path to reaching the level you are aiming for.
We are in beta and every session matters. Your playing helps us build the dataset that will eventually close the gap between where you are and where you want to be.
